Join us in Port Vila, Vanuatu, from July 19-31, 2023 for a celebration of Melanesian heritage and identity. This biennial event brings together artists, performers, and cultural practitioners from across the region to promote and preserve traditional arts and culture, while also providing a platform for contemporary expressions of Melanesian identity.

About MACFEST2023

The Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival has been running since 1998, and this year's event will mark the 7th edition of the festival. Hosted by the government of Vanuatu, in collaboration with the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat, the festival aims to promote regional cooperation and understanding by bringing together people from across Melanesian Spearhead Group member states and allied nations and territories. The festival will feature a range of cultural performances, including music, dance, storytelling, and theater, as well as art exhibitions, handicraft vendors and other activities related to Melanesian arts and culture. The organizers are expecting thousands of attendees from across the region and around the world, including cultural practitioners, scholars, artists, and members of the public who are interested in Melanesian arts and culture.

The 7th Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival is more than just a cultural event; it is a celebration of the diversity, richness, and vibrancy of Melanesian traditions and customs. As a platform for the exchange of cultural knowledge, the festival offers an opportunity for Melanesian Spearhead Group member states and their Pacific partners and allies to showcase and celebrate their unique cultural identities. By bringing together artists, performers, and cultural practitioners from across the region and around the world, the festival serves as a reminder of the important role that culture plays in shaping our shared human experience. Through this celebration of customs, culture, and traditions, the festival helps to promote regional cooperation, mutual understanding, and appreciation for the rich diversity of the Pacific.

The 7th Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival is not just limited to the participating Melanesian nations, but also welcomes other Pacific Island countries to join in the celebration of cultural diversity. While we do not know which other Pacific Island countries will be participating in the festival, we eagerly anticipate the announcement closer to the festival. MACFEST 2023 Theme:
"Rebuilding My Melanesia

for Our Common Destiny”

The theme of the 7th Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival is "Rebuilding My Melanesia for Our Common Destiny”. This theme reflects the festival's commitment to promoting regional unity and cultural diversity. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing and honoring the unique cultural heritage of the Melanesian region, while also building bridges between our communities and promoting a shared sense of identity and purpose. It inspires us to dream together in our common Melanesian experience and offer that unique vision to the world for a better tomorrow. Through this theme, the festival seeks to inspire and empower individuals to take an active role in shaping the future of Melanesia.

Festival Details

The free-to-the-public and not-for-profit festival will take place at various locations around Port Vila, including Independence Park, Feiawa Seafront Park, and Saralana Park, as well as many other nearby venues in and around the tropical island city, featuring stunning views of Port Vila Bay. Activities during the festival will include a range of cultural performances, art exhibitions, handicraft vendors, and other activities related to Melanesian arts and culture. The festival will also feature The Melanesian Spearhead Group Music Festival 2023 hosted by Fest’Napuan at Saralana Park from July 26-2, 2023. Vanuatu will also be celebrating its 43rd Independence Day on July 30.
MACFEST 2023 is organised by Vanuatu Kaljarol Senta.

Schedule for July 19 to 31
The festival schedule is yet to be announced, but attendees can expect a diverse range of events celebrating Melanesian arts and culture over the course of the 12-day festival. The festival will feature traditional and contemporary performances, art exhibitions, handicraft vendors, and other activities related to Melanesian arts and culture.

Travel
Attendees are encouraged to book accommodations early, as hotels and other lodging options are likely to fill up quickly during the festival. There will also be shuttle services available to transport attendees between festival venues.
